Hand Gestures of Sculpture

Yokohama Forest Work
Paradise/Snakes

A special experience that happened at a Sculpture Symposium in Italy, deeply moved me and greatly influenced my philosophy towards sculpture. When I stepped on a large sculpture planted in the earth, I found myself sitting astride the boundary of space and time. It was the first time in my life that I experienced the boundless universe and the insignificance of humans. I learned that I could find within the link between the past and the future, and the kinship different materials, although the universe could never be measured by my short life span.

A series of disasters including earthquakes and typhoons happened in Taiwan in recent years. The dramatic change of the environment enabled me to re-consider the relationship between humans and nature. That is also why I changed my creation theme to “The Hand Series”, returning to the human struggle and a desire for survival rooted in human nature. The great difference between humans and animals lies in the human capacity of bending their hand to create something. A set of structural components can become an entity and release infinite energy. The posture of hands conveys the human expectation of the external world and links with interpersonal relationships. The meaning of human existence is a succession. Beginning from birth, humans evolve from the influences of our artistic ancestors, redefining the art form and passing down to the next generation as artistic legacy.

I want my work to awaken the collective memory of the viewer because the value of art should not be limited to the critics. My series of hand gestures manifests the boundless imaginative space and presets the humanistic imagery of the relationship between individuals and groups. Those hand gestures explore the self-sufficiency of individuals, the complementary relation between two parties ad their unifying actions in motion. I also try to arrange the individuals in groups, whether in repetitive or overlapping forms. Hopefully, my interpretations leave a lasting emotional impression to the viewer in the future.
